Bruce Onobrakpeya
Born in August 1932, Bruce is an art scholar, book illustrator, author, and innovator of artforms and printmaking techniques. He has participated in over 69 solo and group exhibitions around the world since 1959 when he held his first exhibition.
He was artist-in-residence at the Haystack Mountain School of Arts & Crafts, Maine, USA, 1975; Elizabeth City State University, North Carolina, USA,1979; Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, 1984; National Gallery of Zimbabwe, 1991; and MOJA - an African-American Arts Festival, Charleston, South Carolina, USA, 1991.
His art is to be found at the Tate Gallery, UK; the Victoria and Albert Museum also in the UK, the Vatican Museum in Rome, and in galleries like the National Museum for African Art, Smithsonian Institute Washington DC, USA and other galleries in the world. Statesmen and royalties like the Duke of Edinburgh have collected his art. The Duke collected his art in the 1960s during a Commonwealth Art Exhibition held in the UK. He designed the Nigerian Postage Stamp 1/6d in1970 and the ubiquitous glass-etched panels at Nigeria's Murtala Mohammed Airport. He organises one of the longest-running art workshops in Africa, the Harmattan Workshop.
